dub pjanoo to me

"Dub Be Good to Me" is a popular single by the club music artist Beats International, released in 1990. It is generally considered the band's signature song. And that ends the Wikipedia information since I consider it lacking. Many people have told me I should interject some personal commentary into this site. Rhythm Scholar is probably the biggest hound in that regard. So here goes nothing. As far as I'm concerned this track is seminal. To my knowledge it is the first mash-up to be released commercially. It is the first mash-up to chart; number 1 UK. And this was in 1990! Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim aka whatever he calls himself these days will always be genius in my book for this track alone.

The first time I heard it I rushed to the DJ to commend him on such an inspired mix. He then told me "It's a proper record, mate." I could hardly believe anyone would mix the Clash with the S.O.S. Band. And then to find out it was a commercial release?! Impossible! But soon afterwards I headed down to Andy's Records and sure enough there it was. I'm sure some would argue it's not a proper mash-up because the S.O.S. Band is not actually sampled since Lindy is singing. The Guns Of Brixton bassline may or may not be sampled. I know Paul Simonon threatened legal action. Norman Cook denied that it was sampled and in fact denied that it was the same bassline. A totally ridiculous claim of course. The case was settled out of court and I'm guessing Paul Simonon pocketed a few pounds. The legal resolution means nothing to me though. It's the spirit of the track I'm concerned about. For all intents and purposes this is a mash-up. At the very least one of the first and still one of the best. The bassline is missing from this particular mix in order to make room for Pjanoo. I urge you to check out the original, if you've never heard it. Original as in The Guns Of Brixton and Dub Be Good To Me. And now back to your regularly scheduled Wikipedia entry.

"Pjanoo" (pronounced 'piano') is a piano-based house track by the Swedish DJ and producer Eric Prydz. It has received moderate airplay amongst British radio stations, being heavily used by BBC Radio 1 in advertisements for their "Radio 1 Big Weekend" and "Weekend in Ibiza" events. It is currently on their A List[1] and is on regular rotation during daytime shows.

The song has been on promotional release since 17 March 2008[2] with Eric Prydz own label, Pryda, with a limited amount of 12" pressings available on special order. The song was released on August 25, 2008 by Ministry of Sound's Imprint Label, Data Records.

Prydz stated in an interview with BBC Radio 1 that he wrote the track years ago. When played at a show in Stockholm, the track didn't gain any interest from the clubbers. Prydz forgot about the track until he found it in his collection at a recent show and decided to play it. A fan in the crowd filmed him playing it live and posted it on Youtube. This gained much popularity on the video site and Prydz decided to release it as a single. [3].
